Has an educational base in Geotechnical Engineer, and more than 10 years in GIS/cartography expertise. Also she has extensive background in geotechnical issues, geomaterials characterisation and geomechanics, coastal management research in national projects, aerial photogrammetry and high resolution GPS, geoengineering and geosciences methodologies and techniques. In 2007 won a Science and Technology prize for Geotechnical Engineering (“Prémio Rolando Moreira de Ciência e Tecnologia em Engenharia Geotécnica” ISEP). She won the prize for better communication in 2011, awarded by the scientific committee of the ICE - Institution of Civil Engineers - Coastal Management in 2011, Belfast UK. From November’2005 to July’2006 was a Junior Trainee in the Environmental Planning and Urban Division of the “Câmara Municipal de Espinho”. Between November’2006 and November’2007 was an FCT research scholarship holder for the “GroundUrban” project (Urban groundwater and environmental management in the Northwest Portugal). Even though Ana Pires has been involved from more than 10 years in the research field, she has also been working in the management field of R&D projects and GIS consulting. She also is an expert in several geoscientific softwares applied to GIS mapping and applied cartography, as well as is proficient in Photoshop and other programs.
